An alcoholic disaster kidnaps a child and runs to Mexico in a vain attempt to put her life back on course with the promise of quick cash. The film owes much to the Gena Rowlands vehicle; Gloria. There are times when Swinton embodies Rowlands to such perfection that it seems caricature. This gives way halfway through the movie however, when all the trappings dissolve and what is left is a mediocre crime film.
An awful story expressed brilliantly. This is one of those films that has a story that is difficult to watch because everything that could go wrong does and then gets worse. Direction and cinematography are tops, however, revealing just enough of the important details and in sometimes stunning, sometimes grotesque manners. Definitely a bared-truth human drama of incontinence and greed.
Regardless of various plot holes, this film achieves greatness through Swinton's performance. There is simply nothing else like it in her filmography and it is a true testament to incredible talent. As a piece of pulp fiction, it is also very entertaining and thrilling.
Another mesmerizing performance by the great Tilda Swinton in this well written and directed film by Erick Zonca. A darker take/homage to Cassavetes' 'Gloria' that isn't afraid to dwell on the darker side of human nature. The ending ultimately a bit of a let down but the two and half hours getting there very satisfying. Is there anything Swinton can't do?
Logical descent into a tightening spiral of paranoia and desperation edged by a subtle sense of maternalism. Swinton plays an ace in a role that should attract little sympathy but she manages to lace it with well judged and thought-through emotion. It's overlong but has a fascinating underbelly rooted in the blackest of farces.
This was kinda tough to sit through, but not without jolts of humor bubbling up. Tilda Swinton is VERY brave in this, and the supporting characters were all important and interesting. This was effective. I just don't know when'll be the next time I'll wanna watch it.
Tilda is such a treasure! This picture is such a breath of fresh air, it is really a provoking picture, its dirty and ugly at times. But yet it has this power that it just grabs you and makes you see this character's reality. The ending is so fantasic it left me really wanting her to get want she wants, she wins you over, when in fact its wrong on what she has done. It's just a great film.
