http://bit.ly/2pUDT2v : Fantasy as Poetry, Fiction as Metaphor in Shinkai’s YOUR NAME.
With such depth, this fun-to-watch anime is far denser that first appears, but because of Shinkai’s subtlety it can be viewed in number of differing manners. From the pleasure seeking fantasy to the romance drama to the philosophical inquiry of life itself, Your Name is a brilliant example of multi-layered cinematic poetry.
The emoting was a bit too Dashboard Confessional. As a rites-of-passage film, there are more compelling narratives. Admittedly, teen characters are meant to be hormonal but Ghibli films like 'Spirited Away' do far more to show the arc between childhood and adulthood. Nonetheless, Shinkai et al. are outstanding animators. A mixed bag of a film. 2.5
TIFF NWFF Box office smash at home is a magnificent anime' telling an universal tale about adolescence, coming of age, gender and love. The tales' cleverly constructed timeline is a marvel as is the rich love story that develops within it. Visually rich in its creation with a memorable soundtrack. Though full of high emotion film never seems manipulative or corny but satisfies on every level.
YOUR NAME maybe is the great animated movie that I watched recently. It's exciting, thrilling, & beautifully animated. The theme itself maybe sounds cliche, but somehow, director Makoto Shinkai knew how to treat the story very well. YOUR NAME is able to mix coming of age, science-fiction, & Japanese culture perfectly. It's easy for us to love its characters. The twist isn't great but clever. The ending is satisfying!
