Synopsis

Larry Cohen is behind some of the greatest cult films ever made. It’s about time the writer/director/producer was put in front of the camera for a documentary, because the stories behind his films prove as fascinating as the movies themselves.

Critics reviews

While the filmmaker himself is more interested in telling colorful anecdotes than dredging up the portions of his psyche that inspire him, the anecdotes are colorful indeed. . . . If you don’t know the man, you should, and this is a lively, informative introduction.

What are people saying?

  • msmichel's rating of the film King Cohen

Larry Cohen's filmography certainly has some tarnished gems within it making this 'puff piece' vanity project a surprising disappointment. The collected roster of directors, actors and others make it sound like the man directed Oscar winners not genre fixtures like 'It's Alive', 'the Stuff' and 'Q the Winged Serpent'. There are some amusing tidbits here and there but this is a calorie free offering.

  • Jason's rating of the film King Cohen

Look, who doesn't love Larry Cohen? How could you not? He is a maniacal idea factory, and he doesn't give a toss about being considered low, in bad taste, cheap. And he was a true guerilla when still directing. He violently hijacked his production value. This is one of those documentaries that moves chronologically from project to project. A tired approach. And its jocular hardy-har-har quality can be annoying.

  • Rocco's rating of the film King Cohen

This doc could have used some serious polishing by a more assured directorial hand, but the content is absolutely ace. Grateful that someone (ANYONE) managed to capture the fascinating life and titanic appeal of this matchless Hollywood renegade.
