Synopsis

In the town of Krabi, a popular destination in Thailand, the local folklore and histories are promoted as attractions, while the labour force is hidden from the tourists’ eyes. A nameless character, whose identity continually changes, takes us around town to explore sites that capture Krabi now.

Through its meditative exploration of landscape as locus for mystery, memory and deep time, KRABI subtly unsettles the forms and intentions of ethnographic documentary and cinematic ‘recovery’, offering itself as a record of material witnessing that prompts urgent questions about the ways in which place and its inhabitants are irrevocably altered by the act of filmmaking.

As fact and fiction merge, a woman, once our ostensible guide, slowly disappears into the fabric of the narrative, opening up a rift between the ancient and the modern, a liminal zone from which Rivers and Suwichakornpong conjure any number of striking images as they reflexively interrogate notions of identity and cultural tourism.
