Steve Martin has a certain brilliance where he can combine outlandish comedy and very human drama and make it believable. This is very prevalent in this film about a traveling show of con artist evangelists.
One of Steve Martin's initial interesting stabs at a dramatic lead. The cast is strong and the film seems as though it will develop into something compelling. Feels like it was rewritten to provide forced uplift and comfort to a mainstream audience. It is fun to see Martin share scenes with Winger. I remember the ending did not ring true. Steers clear of the darker, cynical possibilities raised by the first act.
