Beautiful, interesting, incredible cinema.
Five boys are ferried to sea by a Dutch Captain, charged with reforming their savage ways. They soon rebel against him and after a shipwreck, they are released into the wilds of a supernatural island. There, the wild boys act upon their sexual desires and undergo a mystical transformation.
Shot on radiant high-contrast film stock—mostly black & white, with ravishing bursts of color—Mandico’s feature debut is an exuberantly erotic reverie. As provocatively political as to cast five women in the titular boys’ roles, this genre-and-gender-bending delirium mystifies and bewitches.
