If cinema was invented in 1980 instead of 1890, this is probably what the first film would look like. Mandico's cinematic influences are heavy, but the sheer amount along with consistent surreality and pure imagination grounds the whole film, far surpassing homage. The score and sound are exceptional and its use of colour is repeatedly striking. A sublime, poetic journey into nightmarishly phallic madness.
Nothing saves this movie nor the form nor the content. The dialogues are awful, the direction is clumsy. It's supposed to be fantasmagorical but it looks and sounds like a bad school play. i don't think the actors were all bad but the actor's direction is so bad it's hard to tell. I could have standed a beautiful movie without content or a well written but clumsy movie but not a clumsy and badly written movie.
Pure freedom in creation. This is what we need in those times of strong conformism in creativity. It has flaws, but they are part of this freedom. "we need to reconquer the imaginary" I absolutely agree with you Bertrand.
