Appalling. Terrible, boring music. Clichéd words. No characterisation discernible. Hack acting, especially from the dreadful E. Redmayne. More sentimentally sloppy than a fluffy kitten's arse. Only bright sparks: cameos from Sacha B-C and Helena B-C (cute as always, even though a slut). Cohen had the best singing voice too. Also some clever visual effects to make Greenwich RNC look 20 times its real size.
When Hathaway wasn't on the screen the only thing I could think was: God, too much unbearable and non stop singing. What could've been a splendid musical turned out to be an epic torture. Damn you, Hooper.
The musical is a lovely, ridiculous piece of shit. Luckily the film is just as enjoyably terrible, full of thin characters, hammy lyrics and bloated, emotionally manipulative sequences. However, Hooper has soaked it all in a genuinely beautiful and grotesque atmosphere - lots of grimey flesh, rotting teeth, ugly faces spitting out even uglier accents, all filmed in raw and engaging handheld
Garbage, pure bloated pretentious self-righteous overproduced overacted schlock, it just lurches from Big Song to Big Song to Big Song to Big Fucking Song, on and on and on and on for nearly three godforsaken hours.
Poor Hugh Jackman was practically losing his voice in the end. I didn't like Crowe as Javert; not intimidating enough. Anne Hathaway's solo was literally breathtaking in all respects, I think everyone agrees on that point. I wasn't into all the extreme close-ups and whaaat happened to so much of the dialogue?! Gotta leave a little more in there. Master of the House was the best performance (besides I Dreamed a Dream)
The singing never stops. It just doesn't. Didn't know that going in... and I loved it for it! It felt very melodramatic in all the best ways and every performance was gold especially Hathaway and Jackman. Very emotional. I teared up during one or two moments. Visuals were fantastic, the 1st AC deserves a fucking oscar for how much the camera moved. Much much better than expected. 4.5 for me but I'll give it the 5.
Anne Hathaway's short performance is worth all the shortcomings of Les Mis being adapted to this 3 hour emotionally draining odyssey. She's fantastic. Russel Crowe can't quite match the intensity of Hugh Jackman and on the whole the singing is hit or miss. Despite all this, Tom Hooper still manages to convince us that Victor Hugo's "Les Mis" is a story relevant enough 150 years later for us to continue to engage. ***
My favorite musical gets the massive cinematic treatment it deserves by Tom Hooper, who thankfully resists the urge to go over the top in every single scene. Make no mistake, this film is huge, but its really all about the performances. The intimate, long take renditions of "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," and "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" really kill. Still works better on a stage, but its hard to deny its power.
