Nice debut. At times, the acting is not as solid as the cinematography or the editing. Still, a sharp little story about teenage group dynamics, peer validation seeking and the subtle and not so subtle cruelty of popularity structures. Good soundtrack choice.
Pair one of my favorite directors with one of my guilty pleasure authors, and I'm totally in love. Coppola and Andrews both have that "young girl trapped in a gilded cage" thing that is very complementary. Lick the Star is an amazing debut for Coppola, and brings a lot of nostalgia with it.
This is actually, in my opinion, the best of Coppola. You get a glimpse of something really interesting, a spark if you must, of a thought. Of course, she proves us through her filmography that so far she hasn't quite put that anywhere else yet and it seems to be what she always lacks of, but this one's cool, it's interesting.
