Gerwig’s Little Women is an adaptation for a new century. She has reimagined the narrative, cutting it into large chunks and reordering them so Alcott’s story is told out of sequence. This was a gamble with a book that is familiar to readers all over the world, and it works. The film is something of a masterpiece, with long, loping scenes shot on location in Massachusetts.

The editing is like something out of eighteenth-century marquetry, with every little piece cut up and nested into another one. The result can be bewildering. But, if you remember Alcott’s story, you realize that most of this editing is thematic.
