In this lyrical and poetic consideration of the life of revered Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, film-maker Isaac Julien invokes Hughes as a black gay cultural icon, against an impressionistic, atmospheric setting that parallels a Harlem speakeasy of the 1920s with an 80s London nightclub.

Beautifully choreographed, although the film felt more like part of a performance piece. Not sure how Julien felt he was alluding to the 'death of the author'- I prefer to read that scene as a glimpse into the director's morbid curiosity (thinking of Jamaica Kincaid's Annie John). Having watched the commentary, thought there could be more ambiguity/ less literal interpretation of texts. Still, gloriously shot.
