LOOKING FOR LIGHT: JANE BOWN

In the 60 years that Jane Bown photographed for the Observer newspaper, she became renowned for insightful portraits of the famous–Queen Elizabeth, Samuel Beckett, the Beatles. Diminutive in stature and with an ability to blend in, she was the antithesis of the Fleet Street, macho photojournalist.

Jane Bown was one of the great chroniclers of 20th-century British culture, a portrait photographer employed by the Observer newspaper for most of her professional life. This insightful and probing documentary surveys her career, while allowing her beautifully presented work to speak for itself.
