Lots of good ideas. Some bad ones too. Seems to lack a certain discipline in the gaps between dancer movement, still-photoesque composition, and wordless, deconstructed Madonna narrative. Still, lots of good ideas. I was reminded of 1960's Philippe Garrel films played by a robotic mannequin cast.
Somehow it is said this is a modern take on Mother Mary but since the birth ends in the "city of sin", Las Vegas, maybe this also could be seen as a whole new tale of a different Mary and the birth of Anti-Christ? In the end you can decide as this is in itself an unique take on an old tale with some good visual moments. It is nice MUBI give room to new talents I never would have seen anywhere else but here.
Alright one of my faves Kentucker Audley is in this, mainly the reason I saw it as well as Celia Rowlson-Hall's interesting premise. Some beautiful moments chalked up in a glacier I wish I could have fully admired. But it's an original take on a story that's been done maybe just maybe too many times?
great idea, weak realization, the kind of film where everything except the locations sucks, a few good-looking shots in the beginning and that's it, all the rest is just a series of wordless, over-lynchenized scenes, haven't seen such pretentious crap for quite a while
Works better as a series of surrealistic postcards than as a coherent film. Great cinematography but the elements of dance performance never really meld with the environment, rather feel alienated from it, the constant switching between modes and genre make the film seem self-consciously staged and rather immature/alienating. “No Motels were harmed in the making of this film.”
Gorgeous shots, evocative scenes, and a otherworldly soundtrack: the 'use at you own risk' set.
The use of silence is a bit pretentious and there is a tendency to drama and lyricism. You grasp the motifs: rape, sand/water duality, renewal, betrayal. In the end though, I asked myself: why it had to have such halo of spirituality? I had the impression: for its own sake, aesthetics, and the pleasure of masturbation.
