It’s certainly a daring work, and not without power, but it’s also breathless – something which could never be said for the later work. The film benefits from a dreamlike atmosphere, but it’s hamstrung by moments which feel feverishly amateurish (the climactic battle is hardly a fine display of swordsmanship)
