The father of a terminally ill girl is determined to grant his daughter’s last wish, a ridiculously expensive collectors’ costume from a Japanese TV series. The request will drive him into a journey within his city’s dark underbelly.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
Do you see "The Future" & "Androids Dream" on MUBI ? If so, watch this weirdly enigmatic & disturbingly tough neo-noir which depicts how devastating economic crisis in Spain is & how devastated people in Spain is by that. Three films supplement each other and criticize their country at perspective of past, future & present. Personally, I'm interested in somehow using Japanese culture like mahou shoujo/magical girl.
Such an underrated Spanish gem that I'd Immediately googled "spain oscar submission 2015" and had a sudden urge to slap whoever submit any other film beside this (especially since the Argentines *can* did it right with WILD TALES, and this tale of how far men would go to satisfy/protect women they love, could easily fit in the WILD TALES universe and became its 7th section).
Quite something. Magical Girl begins like an indie drama before morphing into a kind of slow burn thriller that scrapes at the morally bankrupt darker edges of the human psyche. There are questions left unexplained but they only add to the strength of the story and sense of intrigue. Gripping. 4 stars
