Up to the closing shots I was like: "This was a Soviet-style, vigorous, resentful, enemy-of-progress whodunnit, but man wasn't it gorgeous?". Munk's last minute 180-degree turn is a master strike though - saving humanity (or was it the same old grudging, duty & power play-obsessed perfectionism?) against the class entrenchment - and I bet such tricks didn't make him very popular with censorship o'his time. A profoundly humanist exploration of the conflict among duties, especially if some thrive on suspicion and authoritarianism. Through this lens the lag between modernity and traditional professional honor generates the sense of a collapse of values, to which the old engineer tries, altruistically, to cling to and defend. Told in flashbacks it is nicely photographed and features a compelling Opalinski. Recommended!
