After a 10 year lull Guest returns with his stock company for this bottom of the barrel mockumentary. Guest of course made classic comedies like 'Waiting for Guffman' and 'A Mighty Wind' with these performers but has wandered far from inspiration with this direct to Netflix entry. A shame.
Since “Spinal Tap”, Christopher Guest has been making mockumentary comedies with slowly diminishing returns. This Netflix film goes undercover in the world of amateur sports mascots and is warm hearted and consistently amusing if not laugh out load funny.
While Mascots feels somewhat derivative from his earlier works, Christopher Guest's new mockumentary still manages to deliver a hilarious farce with a gifted ensemble cast which creates comic wonders. Too bad regulars Catherine O'Hara & Eugene Levy were not around this time.
Not Christopher Guest's best by any means, but definitely a laugh riot that's a worthy addition to his canon. It features a lot of his repertory cast, but includes plenty of newcomers as well. Zach Woods, Susan Yeagley, Sarah Baker, and Tom Bennett are excellent new additions to this troupe and delivered some insanely clever improvised lines.
