Synopsis

Amin, a young screenwriter goes to his Mediterranean home town for a summer vacation where he falls in love with Jasmine, and meets a producer who agrees to finance his first film. But when the producers wife shows interest in Amin, leaving him to decide between her, Jasmine and his career.

Is Kechiche simply blowing off creative steam here after the emotional heavy-lifting (on-screen and off) of Blue Is the Warmest Colour? Or are we seeing a genuine artist scorning self-restraint and deliberating amping up his personal aesthetic to the ultimate, experimenting with the minimalisation of narrative while keeping one foot on the commercial-cinema floor? …Despite the my-summer-of-love vibe, Kechiche transcends simple nostalgia.

You really feel that these characters are being spontaneous, even though you know that the effect is painstakingly contrived through editing and through Kechiche’s endurance approach to directing actors. But everything feels both real and wildly energetic: …the first, astonishingly vibrant scene between Amin and Ophélie; the scene where the older women in the film chat, including Amin’s mother: it all carries a furious energy that’s extremely rare in French or any other cinema.

Without a strong story, or particularly interesting protagonist the drama feels even longer than its already wildly overlong 186 minutes. While studded with moments of power and often radiant with the shining, supple loveliness of its cast, this ostensibly energetic dip into the fountain of youth that is a Mediterranean beachside summer could make even the best-disposed viewer feel tired and creaky and ancient.
