I'm a bit sad this movie has such a low rating. Yes, it's certainly not Cinema as art; anyone looking for visual beauty or human insight will come up empty. But as a blockbuster, I think it's an excellent one. It's got chemistry between its performers, a distinctive use of special effects, a structurally-sound story, and some genuinely witty humor, all of which are too rare at the multiplexes.
Didn't like this when it came out in 97, I didn't get all the hype and that was the last time I saw it. I just gave it another watch and I really enjoyed it a lot more than previous. Still holds up after all this time, and deserves to be a classic which is what it is. lots of fun, great chemistry with Jones and Smith and just a really good story.
Full speed throughout this sci-fi comedy with a lot of visual gags and one-liners - many of them surprisingly funny. The duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith works. The effects were solid for it's time except the last effect sequences during the showdown with the bug which were terrible even when it premiered. The make-up is fantastic though but I would gladly have the theme song wiped from my memory please.
'Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow.' always love the franchise!
After six minutes watching, I already wanted it finished. I then forced myself to keep watching and open my mind but I couldn't. The humor throughout isn't able to cover how horrendous and ludricous this looks (and is).
