The first half of the film shows potential; the wordless gibberish of the minions (as characters) pushing the filmmakers towards something almost approaching silent comedy. This later gives way to a brief road-movie set-up that is charming & littered with absurdist humour. Things start to lose focus when it becomes a standard "evil villain threatens the world" action-adventure story, but the animation is fantastic.
The Minions are intriguing. We are a long way from the first experiences in anti-hero narratives, decades ago. We might even not really pay attention to the fact that minions "want to serve villains". Why should we?, it's just fun. Minions, however, are not villains. They are serfs. They form a mass but looking up close, we can see subtle signs of individuality. Their life is empty without servitude. They have fun.*
Empty headed summer fun geared more towards the kiddies than the young at heart. Quite a few genuine laughs sprinkled throughout with Sandra Bullock well voice cast as the villain Scarlet. Disposable but enjoyable pop culture.
Innocuous, sure, but it becomes very apparent that the Minions aren't the characters that were ever meant to sustain a whole film. Between the dull supporting cast of characters, limited dialog, and simple story, one gets the idea even the creators were beating their heads against the wall, trying to figure out how to move this story forward.
Hugely disappointing, mostly because it squanders enormous potential. Where it works - precisely 3 times - is where it embraces anarchic surrealism - the Tower of London guards doing 'Hair', for example. But there's a jarring insistence on characters and structure and cameos. Ditch the pointless plot, dull characters and all dialogue - except for Minionese - and a bonkers, Pythonesque "Minions 2" might just work.
Disappointing, but still funny due to the minions which are some visually masterpieces from my point of view. The narration was weak and the jokes were ... well, let's say it seemed that they tried too much and ended with nothing much. Besides BA NA NA!
every good thing in the movie was in the trailer
if i hadn't seen the trailer i'd prob give it three stars
actually the narration in the movie was extremely damaging
just let the minions do their thing
the visual jokes will take us along for the ride
