La casa de papel inverts the heist film formula bypassing the preparation stages of a quickly executed robbery, instead focusing on the drama that emerges during a prolonged heist (à la Dog Day Afternoon). This enables the existence of The Professor, an auteur figure that openly states how he intends to manipulate the audience and offers us a fresh and exciting view of otherwise overtread conventions.
The laughable way this show handles exposition puts Black Dynamite's most hilarious line to shame.
"Jimmy, I am 18-year-old Black Dynamite and you're my 16-year-old kid brother and you are high as a kite yet again!"
The writing is truly atrocious. Not only that, but the showrunners fail to understand the basic economy of moving shots, and so we end up being presented with a ridiculous amount of 360ºs.
It's a thriller and it delivers like one. Complex characters, some controversial choices to be admired (character-wise) and an 'oh we're stuck now, no we're not, here's why and how' kind of action, leaving its audience satisfied at times and completely annoyed with certain plot gaps, intentional ones. The only downside, for me, was the anime fantasy someone in the crew had to fulfill with Tokyo.
There were some good moments in these series, but there were also things that are utterly unforgivable. In a show that takes itself seriously building characters like that are that caricaturish is insulting. How stupid is it for someone to have a very packaged motive like, I'm doing the robbery because it was my father's wish? How to believe in a genius with such flat, immature and undeveloped motivations?
