A frank portrayal of a year in the life of a divorced mother living in Melbourne, trying to cope with her daughter and her own relationship with a drug addict while trying to get into the music business.

Adapted from Helen Garner's award winning novel, "Monkey Grip" is a portrayal of a year in the life of Nora, a young divorced mother who becomes involved with a junkie while trying to make sense of her identity. Noni Hazlehurst is good as Nora but Colin Friels is the real standout as Javo, Nora's drug addled boyfriend. Lookout for Chrissie Amphlett as Angela and The Divinyls performing some of their hits.
Lovely for the nostalgia (Melbourne in the 80's!), however the adaptation was a bit clunky. Narration needed to be more consistent, or have had a better way of weaving itself through the plot - i.e. time-framed chapters, by month/season, etc.
