Charming prequel to MONSTERS, INC. lacks that films heart and emotional kick, even if there are some nice character moments between Sully and Mike. Playfully pokes fun at college life, but falters at the end with its strange message that getting kicked out of college will bring you great things in life. Not bad, but we expect better from Pixar, not just coasting on laurels on better things that have come before.
I'll give Monsters University points for amazing-looking (same for The Blue Umbrella short) animation (the scene by the lake was astonishing) but the story was just lazy, stunted crap. I normally give Pixar points for entertaining kids & adults alike but its like they stuck the Monsters Inc cast in a bad G-rated college comedy. I hope they cut the sequel crap and continue with more innovative fare like Up and Wall-E.
Well, Pixar dropped the ball with the short film. Fuck that paperman noise! But for the feature, its a nice return to the monsters inc universe that doesn't really do much than be cute and explore the characters. But I guess, it doesn't really need to do more than that but they could have added more flavor.
It was lovely to reencounter some of the monsters and getting to know some new ones too. "University" is funny, loud, energetic and carries an important message for kids and grown-ups alike. It lacks, however, the emotional core of the first film, because this time there's no adorable little girl melting our hearts while spreading the chaos everywhere! I say they should bring her back for a third film!
Not Pixar's best and not quite near the original but as far as college films go, this is pretty freaking entertaining. It's really fun to enter this world and spend time with these characters again and new great characters too (Charlie Day!). Also the film had me laughing out loud during most of it. As much as I need Pixar to create more original content (Brave was kinda good) I did rather enjoy this film a lot.
