My Favourite Fabric

Mon tissu préféré

Directed by Gaya Jiji
France, Germany, 2018

Damascus, Spring 2011. Nahla, 25, is torn between her desire for freedom and the hope of leaving the country thanks to her arranged marriage with Samir, a Syrian expatriate in the USA. When he chooses her younger sister Myriam, she gets closer to her new neighbour, the mysterious Ms Jiji.

Our take

Weaving the sexual awakening of a woman on the cusp of adulthood with the slow beginning of the war in Syria, this subtle, everyday portrait of a female household challenges ideas of femininity and virility in the Middle East. A delicately complex drama, infused with a unique, emancipatory aura.

Critics reviews

The subtlety that Issa brings to the character is quite astonishing given her relative inexperience in front of the camera, and her performance will likely resonate with women who recognise that very precise invocation of self-loathing.
