Jo is 98. Kang is 89. An elderly couple of modest means living in a mountain village, they have been married for 76 years. Playful and devoted, they’ve never been more in love. But the weight of encroaching of time is clear, and as the days tick by at least one of them is going to cross the river.

Our take

A box-office hit in South Korea, this documentary is a deeply moving portrait of love, life, and death. Jin Mo-young spent 15 months observing the nonagenarian couple at the film’s center, resulting in an unassuming and poetic indie gem that will bring even the most hardened viewers to tears.
