The third part of Bill Douglas’s influential, autobiographical trilogy. Jamie leaves the children’s home to live with his paternal grandmother. After working in a mine and in a tailor’s shop, he is conscripted into the RAF, and goes to Egypt, where he is befriended by Robert.

Critics reviews

It’s mainly in the two sequels (My Ain Folk, My Way Home) that the more prosaic limitations of the realism begin to become apparent. When the latter proceeds to follow the hero into the R.A.F. in Egypt in the 50s, the focus becomes at once too diffuse and too conventionally bildungsroman.
