***1/2. Richard Widmard steals every scene he's in, he's got a phenomenal presence and Linda Darnell is perfect in the role of a bad girl seeking redemption. Sidney Poitier, in his first movie, does an excellent job as a doctor whose first patient is a psychopath. Very good social drama of the early 1950's. More than recommended.
What a film. Widmark oozes pure venom and hatred. Should of received an Oscar nod I feel. Poitier sets his own personal bar high here, in his first major film, a bar that he met and exceeded in pretty much every role he took on. Essential film.
