Ignore my rating. I really shouldn't be rating their movies and shorts because I'm very harsh and critical when they're clearly geniuses. The problem is that when I watch their work I want to edit it. I want to re-arrange, get rid of things. I even want to change the musical aspects. It's as though I made it myself, and I still want to work on perfecting it. I won't adapt, so I have to change it.
This dreamlike journey through an imagined city of cobblestones & gothic dread, establishes many of the obsessions & eccentricities that permeate the later films of the brothers Quay. The story, effectively a nightmare of nocturnal existence, its character drifting as if through sleep, is negligible, but like Eraserhead in miniature, it's the world of the film, its textures & its rhythms, that draws the audience in.
not unpolished, but neither is it unsurprising that this is their first extant film.
that said, this is really evocative of an emotional and physical space of isolation that i once inhabited as well as some habitual behavior & coping methods of mine, so it kind of overwhelmed me there
