Ratings & Reviews

  1. Antares Rising's rating of the film On War

3.5. An engaging existential journey of a privileged Frenchman. Not particularly deep, but interesting.

  2. Adam GR's rating of the film On War

Mathieu Almaric uses ample reservoir to play Bertrand Bonello in an autoportrait of existential crisis, discovering frequency meditation, and the hard-won skillfulness of assimilating enlightenment into everyday life. I like Bonello's suave sense of image narration, eliciting emotion based on mysterious mise-en-scène, editing, and sound design. Argento is actually so versatile. Shout out to Guillaume Depardieu.

  3. Nicole's rating of the film On War

Amalric is something else in this one, playing Bonello's alter-ego it seems. If a film starts out with a Bob Dylan quote it better be at the very least pretty good. This one had Amalric having a staring contest with a wild animal, dance scene in a beautiful forest BEFORE The Lobster existed, Lea Seydoux playing a calm yet horny cult member, references to Cronenberg, chapters that go by books. Overall, pretty good.

  4. Wee Hunk's rating of the film On War

I saw 'House of Tolerance' and found it to be exploitative and stupid. This is just stupid. Perhaps I don't believe in this mystical pleasure thing. They're in a room full of paintings of Native Americans. He says "Let's just say that I'd like to be dazed by life." She replies "That makes you fierce." He says, "I don't mind becoming fierce." She replies, "Fierce doesn't mean unsociable. It means fierce." Fierce!

  5. RHPC's rating of the film On War

Not sure what to make of this. The first hour or so was interesting, but then it seemed to get lost. The long quote from Apocalypse Now is an embarrassment and should have been left on the cutting room floor. I stuck with this, mostly to see where it would go, but I didn't see any real resolution or point. Is it that just that Amalric eventually does sing and swim, despite saying early on that he can't do either?

  6. Loz Loory's rating of the film On War

Like one of those "movement arts" classes they make you take in drama school: Either you love it because you get to be entirely self-centered and you feel like a god, or you hate it because the whole thing is ridiculously self-centered and you feel like an idiot. The Great Dane is marvelous; it deserves a much larger role.

  7. Malcolm Harris's rating of the film On War

Fight Club isn't cool, you know what's cool? War Club.

  8. Tisza Kálmán's rating of the film On War

Good idea, but the execution was not sp good.

  9. Mad D'Lynne's rating of the film On War

A beautiful and thoughtful drama-comedy that never sacrifices it's integrity for a laugh, bringing an elevated sense of humor to the screen.

  10. Ruiz Buñuel's rating of the film On War

The gutters of the spiritual road: hedonism and isolation tanks.

  11. Kenneth Gentry's rating of the film On War

"I can't spend my life in a coffin."

  12. Sin título.'s rating of the film On War

  13. SAMMAX's rating of the film On War

  14. Mahsa mohammadi's rating of the film On War

A really disappointing one from bonello, not really like the ones i had watched from his works. A very boring "lost" movie, just like his main character.

  15. manybits's rating of the film On War

It's the Silver Curse: any movie featuring Asia Argento inevitably degenerates into a self-indulgent farce. The first thirty minutes are splendid, than Bonello loses his way and gets lost in the woods.

  16. FISCHER's rating of the film On War

  17. Severus Snape's rating of the film On War

„the sun was rising. you could go back to battle. but you did nothing and it was delightful.“

  18. Ivan Gaev's rating of the film On War

Best film about getting transcendental experience. Amasing coolness and deep meditation in each scene. Great Asia Argento as leader of modern cult.

  19. msmichel's rating of the film On War

FNC '11 Strange yet mesmerizing film from Bertrand Bonello. A filmmaker looking for a 'real' experience winds up at a commune of sorts and gives himself over to finding pleasure in life and nature. Cast is game with several of the most interesting actors of the time; Mathieu Almaric, Asia Argento, Elina Lowensohn, and the late Guillaume Depardieu. Interesting use of music and film (Cronenberg, Coppola).
