Once Upon a Time, adapted from a national-romantic play by the Danish writer Holger Drachmann, is set in a fairytale past. The jolly old king of the rococo land Illyria lets his beautiful, but capricious, daughter have her way in all things.

3.5 One thinks of Dreyer as a heavy, humorless filmmaker and that something like this - a comic fairy tale - would be absolutely uncongenial to his nature and he'd ruin it. But how light and comic it often is! Hard to rate this because so much is missing - close to half, I guess, explained by title cards - and that's a pity, because what's here's marvellous.
