Synopsis

Japan, 1944. Hiroo Onoda is sent to a small island in the Philippines where the Americans are about to land. His role will be to wage a guerilla war until the return of the Japanese troops. The Empire will surrender soon after, but for Onoda and his men, the war will go on for 10,000 more days.

Our take

Patriotism curdles into dangerous delusion in Arthur Harari’s immersive portrait of a tragic real-life figure. Saturated cinematography lends a surreal, artificial look to this absurd tale, while bringing out its beauty: isolated by paranoia, soldiers find comfort in their loyalty to one another.
