The director makes the fatal mistake of assuming that we will find this thoroughly hateful, self-absorbed pair of nitwits interesting or easy to indentify with. We wait for the characters to reveal hidden depth that might make you care about their plight, but they remain shallow. The film lacks visual interest, feels endless and regretably denies us the pleasure of seeing these entitled assholes get chomped to bits.
Not as bad as many reviewers suggest, this is a low-key, rather spartan, thriller which makes some interesting use of the vast oceanic expanse and while -and wisely- it avoids bloodbath shock value, it nonetheless enhances its impact simply by recourse to the last vesitges of comfort as the couple is ominously surrounded by sharks. It does play on fear reflexes as opposed to the adrenaline carnivorous tourist gaze.
