It's rare that Japanese auteur, Takashi Miike, is this unfocused, but with 100+ directing credits in only 22 years, and with many bonafide classics, you can make stinkers. And this film is one, as it oddly, and unfortunately, gives most of its run time not to the central story, but rather to the play that parallels the events of that story, making the momentum of both storylines come to a halt every time they switch.
