Crucially, Abu-Assad uses the one-two punch of humour and narrative force to lead viewers deep into the hopelessness that gives birth to suicide-bombing missions and, to his great credit, makes their unacceptable acts finally comprehensible. His film bares the logic of violence in the context of untenable oppression.
