Four women live in the rural town of Gujarat: traditional Rani, a young widow; lively Lajjo, who lives in an abusive marriage; outcast Bijli, a dancer and prostitute who becomes friends with Rani and Lajjo; and Janaki, a young teenager in a miserable arranged marriage to Rani’s son Gulab.

Our take

Though set in a fictional Indian locale, director Leena Yadav uses real-life stories as the basis to examine the rich and complex fates of a group of rural women. Parched tries to make sense of the violence, the hurt, the love, and their urge to survive against the odds.
