The director, Mark Robson, fumbles the script’s late-screwball complications (except for a gleefully pugnacious night-club dance number) but makes much of the real-life milieu where they take place, a nouveau-bourgeois postwar New York, in which the makeup and the schmooze made for impenetrable masks and the Martini was the solvent of preference.
