Poppy is the film version of the Dorothy Donnelly musical comedy which made W.C. Fields a Broadway star back in 1923 (an earlier, less-faithful version, also starring Fields and retitled Sally of the Sawdust, was directed by D. W. Griffith in 1926).

A great Fields comedy. He has some excellent scenes, including selling patent medicine, playing croquet, and trying to play an instrument. Evidently he broke some vertebrae in his back during filming, which may explain why he isn't around as much in the latter half of the film. Still, one of his best films, and a great adaptation of the musical which made him a star in the 20's, albeit without the songs. 4.5 stars
