'Léon' with a lemon twist. I love how she manages to be ruthless, display agency galore ("he was my boyfriend, now he's more like a brother...") sweetly motherly and foxy as rainbows. Not an easy feat. Taraji is here to stay. Maybe I'm being anal but isn't she blocking the entry of her building and the garbage containers with her sweet-ass Maserati...? Just saying. Parking in America is no picnic.
"Proud Mary" is as bland as gas station coffee and as generic as bag cereal. What was marketed as a blaxploitation revival with Taraji P. Henson as the firecracker personality at the center winds up not even being comparable to the B-roll of "Atomic Blonde." There's plenty of these mediocre vehicles hogging space in Redbox machines worldwide. We didn't need to go to the theater to experience the same disappointment.
Taraji P. Henson is incredibly badass here and she looks fine as hell doing it. This is a nice little throwback to the blaxploitation films of the 70s mixed with the modern style of today's action films.
