All this movie needs is a bit more courage to end it with the realisation that it was all an organised crime, instead of putting all on one person. 'Cause "the church wants you to fear satan, so that people turn to god" would be a way more interesting movie sentence.
I'm amazed at how boring this is. It has the cast and the crew, but it goes... nowhere. Nothing happens. There is no tension. The plot twist which tries to justify the "silliness" comes way too late, at that point we've already watched 1,5 hours of this boring greyness. Is it a drama? Is it horror? I guess it should have been way more over the top to work.
Solid thriller from Amenabar that suffers a bit from not taking the movie to the extremities that it should have reached. The cast works the thin script for what it´s worth and it´s a shame there is not more depth to the story. The direction is well handled and moves briskly and offers some creepy scenes. All in all this is a good movie but veers a bit too close to TV-movie land for it to really rise above.
More of a pop, traditional thriller instead of the moodpieces powerhouses in similar works like Villeneuve's Prisoners, Amenábar's take on the modern Americana staple of small town gone wrong is surprisingly lean, clever and solid, even if at fault for jumping through a few hoops of logic and not properly utilizing the potential of the theme. Well played.
I basically grew up in the 80s with adults scaring me about satanists. Weird times! About the film, I'm just glad it didn't go to the direction I thought it was going. People will surely have debated opinions whether this is good or not. It was actually pretty good according to my taste. And that is exactly why it's important to be open-minded when you watch movies. Just let yourself enjoy even the craziest content.
