REVENGE is practically the ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST of rape-revenge films. Its beyond-hyper-stylized and beyond-the-pale attributes will definitely cause one to think of the likes of Gaspar Noé and Nicolas Winding Refn, but nobody will ever mistake it for the megalomaniac pretentiousness of, say, THE NEON DEMON. No. REVENGE is totally amazing trash and proud of it. This Coralie Fargeat owns it, man.
This is one intense and trippy revenge picture. Matilda Lutz is a total badass here as she gives a trio of asshole men their just deserves. Definitely a film that will leave you hanging off of every frame and cringing and cheering as this badass woman gets satisfaction.
After the rape, most of Revenge's action is beautiful visually and gory-as-shit, but is largely by-the-numbers, and lacks any added character development, thus feeling routine. That is, at least, until the last showdown, a sequence rife in tension, and most interestingly, features the villainous male fighting for his life without any clothing. It flips genre conventions around and is also feminist-as-fuck.
Fargeat directs the hell out of this movie up until the moment Jen is pushed off the cliff. From then on the film falls apart and sinks into mediocracy with a "by-the-numbers" revenge routine. There is no development in character which makes both hero and villians uninteresting in the end. And to fall from that height, get impaled and then run around chasing people... Really!? Disbelief not suspended but annihilated.
This is the Kill Bill of the decade. Done with such style and finesse, I can only be at awe at what unfolds on screen. It has everything. Overly saturated imagery, pulsating soundtrack, blood and guts galore, great sense of tension-release and fucking pitch-perfect direction. Coralie Fargeat is the fucking MVP!
2018 and a switch in the portrayal of female victims in horror. This stands out, not only due to the symbols and style. The victim is reborn and fights for her own and the offenders are and exploited (female nudity is absent in contrast to male nudity) and h(a)unted - not saying death is justice though. Also, it lights the importance of consent (victims shouldn't be blamed). More modern female directors are required!
