It conjured up this affect I don't think I've felt before, something between fear and heartbreak, between the sheer terror of a death-risk and the horror of two people who love and destroy each other simultaneously. After spoon-feeding myself the sublime perfection of Iceland's landscapes thru Sigur Ros videos as a beauty-beholden adolescent, I'm grateful for this film for uncaging the violence behind that sublimity.
A nailbiting thriller in a wonderful, secluded setting. The horror is creeping up upon you and is superb mastered, but Rift's biggest advantage is the relationship between main counterparts Einar and Gunnar. It is totally believable and makes the darkness around them so much scarier. Rift (Rökkur) is beautiful and enchanting.
