Knowing Guillermo Del Toro's name is on this suddenly puts Rise of the Guardians into perspective for me. Wild animation and great character design make the movie, even if the Boogeyman looked like Hades from Disney's Hercules and the idea of a Russian Santa and Australian Easter Bunny do it for you. Well worth a watch and a good place to steer the evening if you're harangued into watching a kid's movie.
Gorgeously animated film casts Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, and Jack Frost as guardians of childhood, protecting the innocence of children everywhere, until the Boogeyman threatens to rule them all with fear. A fun ride, if a bit slight (with a somewhat weak script). Never quite conjures the same sense of wonder as HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON or the emotional resonance of KUNG FU PANDA.
An underrated del Toro-produced adventure has bright animation, nice imaginative touches, a solid story, and good voice-acting). Even though the elves were trying to be like Despicable Me Minions and the baby teeth acted like they were from a old Barbie movie I surprisingly got into this movie.
Not nearly half as impressive as I had expected it to be. The characters and plot had a nice basis but definitely weren't developed enough; the ending was terribly. What doesn't help is that computer animation tends to annoy the hell out of me. All in all, a disappointment.
Rise of the Guardians has a script with plenty of issues, but with its perfectly tame humour and visual design that is hard to find in many CG films these days, it's no wonder that Pixar has lost a bit of its effort.
Thought the movie would be generic or lame, found it to be exciting and very beautiful. The best thing is how the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, with a great sense of whimsy that drives even the action sequences. It also has a great sense of mythos, even though it is a little heavy-handed with its core theme. All in all, bad ass and fun.
