The tone of this film is unassumingly intricate in its comedic abstractions, as if its balancing act between absurdity & sincerity were the most natural attitude imaginable. Clarke's characters all exude an eccentric humorous innocence, yet he takes them all intensely seriously--I sensed no condescension. AC's aesthetic is oddly expansive. For all the hilarity, Clarke emphasizes landscape, tranquility, copious space.
Laid in Britain. Endearingly rude working class drama, somewhat more benign and warm hearted than you'd expect from the director. It manages to make a few sharp socio-political points without sledge-hammering them. Chief delights are the naturalistic lead performances which generally charm in an otherwise charmless locale. A cheeky continuation of the traditions of British TV plays which are now all but extinct.
