A great piece of romantic sentiment, but with great characterization and engaging storytelling it earns every second of that sentiment. It doesn't try to be a grandiose spectacle, and I loved it for being what it was.
Here we have a nice case of meta-fiction: the endeavour these characters set out to accomplish is as aimless as the film itself. All I could do was feel sorry for the actors, who were doing a nice job. 2.5/5
loved it. but what exactly is aimless about this film? I found it aiming pretty well. "the fish going against the current". criticism. do what you feel is right rather than what you think it is. faith. hope. etc
Lasse Hallstrom's sweet love story and comedy is a sort of Local Hero meets a toned down version of In the Loop. Here in the dry valleys of the Yemen - Ministers, salmon, soldiers and a small tincture of sentimentality collide in a great flood. Great Scottish murmurs bubble up from Ewan McGregor and are threaded into the delicate broderie anglaise of Emily Blunt. A film to make a wish on and then smile.
I think Ewan has evolved so much in the last year! It was a great year for him!
The movie is not fantastic, but it has an impressive storyline, and it is not boring at all (which I thought might be). I was really impressed and did not expect this much
