An army cadet accompanies an irascible, blind captain on a week-long trip from Turin to Naples. The captain, Fausto, who wants no pity, brooks no disagreement, and charges into every situation, nicknames the youth Ciccio.

35mm. A film that under the mask of a comedy that becomes tragic, lets pass some of the most disgusting tendencies of Italian comedy, in its time criticized by Moretti in one of its first films. Namely: a disgusting male chauvinism, deeply misogynist, which hides in a supposed libertarian heterosexuality and a glorification of that male, properly homophobic. This in a formally indistinct movie. Fa schifo.
***1/2. Two nominations for the 1976 Academy Awards and the Best Actor prize for Vittorio Gassman in Cannes. A movie which focused on the relations between Gassman and women. One understands then why Hollywood screenwriters, for the 1992 remake, focused so much on the college problems of the student who was helping Al Pacino. It was more politically correct! Highly recommended (The Dino Risi movie, of course!).
Agostina Belli é bellisima, and Vittorio Gassman is outstanding as the cynic, blind ex military teaching things about life and women to the naive Alessandro Momo. Another comedy gem by the notable craftsman Dino Risi.
Extremely overrated in my opinion - I feel like I am missing the point here. Gassman's performance is undermined by the general mediocrity of the film. The cliché music gets on your nerves from the opening credit to the last scene, while Belli's melo-dramatic acting is most irritating.
Hoping that it is because the film has not aged well.
In the Hollywood remake, the blind colonel was loud as a function of his moral convictions to espouse old, if military, values. In the Italian original, the blind counterpart is doubly blind, morally & physically blind, loud only with vulgarity, a mechanism to project autonomy & superiority at the expense of everyone else around--labeled as "whores," "faggots" & others deemed worse, deserving of extreme prejudice.
Tragihilarious. I vitalise my poetic act accordingly after this proto-surrealist character. To be a blindman to undermine the imaginary restraints of this crazy life, organised by religion, politics, sexuality, and all other useless pile of human dogma which can never represent the actuality of the universe and its creator.
