A Christmas Carol needs to be damp and sooty; it needs to emanate out of a choking London fog swirling with spirits of the damned—only then can its final joyous movement really sing. Edwards’s Twickenham Studios production fits the bill: workmanlike and not overly stylized, yet evocative in all the right ways, Scrooge is a shroud of a movie.
