This is a dark love story with some black humours. For the themes supplied here, it's very original with unusual subject matter that downright bizarre, quirky, rauncy and totally off-beat. And it is such a pure delight to see Maggie's portrayal of the character and the chemistry between the two lead casts.
Funny, in a bewildering way. It teases and masks, by showing. What is submission and dominion? What is S&M? Probably those are not even the themes of this film. Or these questions are not addressed. The relation of these two is masterfully played. A man and a woman. Who is submited and who submits. What are the rules. What is the game. Maybe it's as simple as the tile. Good to see alongside 2011 Sleeping Beauty.
Maybe there are two kinds of people: the ones who stick more to traditional, outworn and inflexible sexuality models - they probably won't like this film and say "this is sick". And then there's the other ones. They might enjoy Secretary pretty much.
