Critics reviews

Olivier Assayas’ three-hour period drama is the most unfairly neglected of his features. Spanning the first four decades of the 20th century, the film follows a Protestant factory owner (Charles Berling) through two marriages (first to Isabelle Huppert, then to Emmanuelle Beart) and changing fortunes; fluid camerawork and attentive editing draw out the characters’ repressed emotions and anxieties.
