Synopsis

Apuna, an Inuit hunter, drives his dog team out on the frozen Arctic Ocean in search of seals and inadvertently becomes a witness to murder. The murderer, Miqu, claiming self-defense, tries to persuade his friend to forget what he has seen, and help dispose of the body.

Our take

The icy vastness of the Alaskan tundra serves as an aptly secluded setting for this tale of murder and morality. Stunningly photographed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, Sikumi is a riveting example of short-form filmmaking, zeroing in on how personal and communal interests intersect in a small Inuit tribe.
