Leon Le–whom I never heard before–surprises me with his first feature film "Song Lang", a movie about Vietnamese folk opera golden era. It's beautifully shot and has a distinct (Wong Kar-wai) personality.
Leon Le's beautifully detailed depiction of the Saigon of the 80's brings the audience on the road of nostalgia. But the romance between Dung, an embittered gangster and Linh Phung, a young theatre performer fortunately never gets sentimental, as Leon Le prefers to hint rather than show, and injects a darker tone reminiscent of Hong Kong films noirs. The two leads are perfect. A revelation.
