What are people saying?

  • Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film Souls at Sea

With all its shadows and fog it feels like kin to the films Carne and co. were making around the same time in France. It's the 1840s (with typical Hollywood circa 1937 accents): Cooper's phony slave trader reads Shakespeare, quotes poetry, and secretly works to undermine the international slave trade. Raft wears his mother's wedding ring in his ear, then finds the one girl he'd like to give it to. A beauty.
